Everyday Activities You’re Probably Doing Wrong Right Now

By Ross Jurewitz on December 11, 2013

California Personal InjuryLife is full of mundane, run-of-the-mill activities that we simply take for granted. But, did you know that you probably could make your life better by changing the way you do these little things?

According to The Huffington Post, you are probably not washing your hands correctly or even breathing properly. And don’t even get us started on showering.

Here are some of the activities you may think you are doing correctly, but probably aren’t.

Breathing

That’s right, you breath some 17,000 times a day and you may be doing it wrong every single time. Apparently, most of us are chest breathers, when we should really be engaging in deeper breathing that comes from the lower diaphragm. This kind of breathing helps improve athletic performance, lowers blood pressure, and relieves stress.

Washing Your Hands

Come on, washing hands is a no-brainer, right? Not really. In fact only five percent of Americans do it correctly. You are supposed to rub your hands vigorously with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Try counting off 20 seconds the next time you wash your hands and you will get a small inkling of what eternity feels like.

Being Productive

According to experts who study such things, it is literally impossible to multitask. Those who think they are multitasking are simply moving very quickly between tasks. Actually, such “multitasking” is an activity that decreases focus. Additionally, taking more breaks boosts your mental capacity to do work.

Showering

Do you wash your hair every day? Not a good idea. It strips the hair of much needed oils. Ironically, shampooing too frequently can make your hair greasier because your scalp produces more oils to compensate for the oils that are removed while lathering up.

Like a good, long shower? Maybe you shouldn’t. Long showers actually dry out your skin and can remove good bacteria from your body.

Sleeping

Millions of Americans don’t get enough sleep. Not a big deal, right? Actually, it is. Improper sleep habits have been linked to long-term health risks (shortened lifespans) as well as cognitive and emotional problems.

Sitting

Most of us sit too long. Sitting for more than a few hours a day can lead to an increased risk of developing heart disease or diabetes. Even if you exercise, sitting around in an office all day still increases your risk of developing health problems. If you must sit all day, at least spring for a decent ergonomic chair that helps you sit properly.
