Common Injuries after a San Diego Motorcycle Hit-and-Run Accident

There’s a reason so many people are afraid of motorcycles. When a person is driving them, they’re at a much greater risk for injuries and accidents than any other motorist on the road. Even with helmets and protective clothing, motorcyclists aren’t enclosed in a solid steel frame, and there’s nothing between them and other vehicles, or their surroundings. For this reason, motorcycle injuries are much more common, and much more severe. Sadly, this can be especially true in hit and run accidents.

The most common injuries after a motorcycle hit and run accident are:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Even when wearing a helmet, head injuries and TBIs are the most common injuries seen after motorcycle accidents. After a hit and run, these injuries can be exacerbated by the fact that no one may know the motorcyclist is even there and so, any swelling or bleeding in or around the brain or skull will only get worse.
  • Spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries are also very common in motorcycle accidents and again, without any assistance or anyone to call for help, these can only worsen over time.
  • Internal bleeding/organ damage. Internal bleeding can be caused by any impact or injury that occurred during the accident. Internal bleeding however is something that can become extremely severe, and can even cause death, if left untreated.
  • Crushed limbs. Crushed limbs are common in any motorcycle accident because motorcyclists are typically thrown from their bike during a crash. In hit and runs however, the motorcyclist is sometimes still lying in front, behind, or beside the car that hit them and when that driver leaves, it leaves the motorcyclist at even greater risk for crushed limbs.

In addition to these injuries, there are other injuries that motorcycle drivers can suffer after a hit and run accident. These are:

  • Broken back
  • Facial fractures
  • Road rash
  • Burns
  • Lacerations
  • Severe bruises and abrasions

Unfortunately, many motorcyclists in San Diego think there’s nothing they can do after being in a hit and run motorcycle accident, but that’s not true. Drivers that have uninsured motorist coverage included in their own insurance policy will be able to recover costs through their own insurance company, and there may be some other circumstances in which motorcyclists can receive compensation.
