September 15-21 is officially known as Child Passenger Safety Week, but for families with children, it’s important to consider child passenger safety every week of the year. You can help protect the children in your life when you travel by following these guidelines:

  • Base car seat choices on height and weight, not age. Car seats of every type are designed to protect children based on their height and weight ranges, even if these are unusual for the child’s age. Keep a child in a car seat until he or she is too tall or too heavy to use it safely.
  • Put children in the back. The safest place for children to ride in any vehicle is in the back seat. Until age 13, kids should ride in the back using a child seat or a booster seat appropriate for their height and weight.
  • When in doubt, seek assistance. Most communities have places families can go to have their car seats checked to ensure they’re installed correctly and are right for the child. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at safercar.gov or download the SaferCar app for smartphones to find the location nearest you.
