Driver killed in crash with tree near Mira Mesa High School

SAN DIEGO, CA — A driver died early Thursday after crashing into a tree near a busy intersection in San Diego’s Mira Mesa neighborhood, according to FOX 5 San Diego.

The accident took place near Mira Mesa Boulevard and Camino Ruiz, just south of a major shopping center at around 5:40 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates a Honda CR-V veered left and struck an island dividing the thoroughfare’s east and westbound lanes. The vehicle then appeared to have slammed head-on into a tree, causing serious head trauma to the driver, according to San Diego Police.

Despite life-saving measures from first responders, the driver died from their injuries at the scene.

Mira Mesa Boulevard was closed between Montongo Street and Reagan Road as authorities diverted traffic through Parkdale Avenue. The closure was expected to remain for hours while investigators worked the scene.

It is unclear at this time what led up to the accident.
