Car Crashes after Gun Fire on I-8

EL CAJON, CA – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) chased a Toyota 4-Runner from Mission Valley to East County, after the driver sped past a traffic break. The chase started on Interstate 8 near SR-163 and ended on Interstate 8 near Buckman Springs road, when the driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed, according to NBC 7 San Diego.

During the chase on April 23, the driver, who police identified as 26-year-old Alec Zachary Bennett, opened fire on one of the CHP officers from an open window in his vehicle. The shooting occurred on I-8 near SR-67, but Bennet did not injure any of the CHP officers involved in the chase.

After Bennet crashed the Toyota, he attempted to run from the police. Police tasered Bennet and ultimately used a K-9 unit to stop him. Officers transported the driver to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Bennet is facing charges of evading arrest and attempted murder of a peace officer.
