According to a report by U-T San Diego, on December 19, a single vehicle rollover accident occurred on I-15 close to the Old Highway 395 overpass around 12:20 p.m. Three passengers were killed while three others were taken to the hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
Officials say the 2001 Ford Explorer was heading south when the driver lost control and swerved across multiple lanes into the center guardrail. Upon impact, the vehicle flipped, landing upside down on the opposite side of the freeway.
A sheriff’s deputy who witnessed the rollover claims that the tread on the vehicle’s right rear passenger tire came off prior to the accident. His statement was recorded in the medical examiner’s report.
The deceased were three adults in their early- to mid-twenties, two of whom were married. Thankfully, the couple’s 2-year-old daughter survived the crash with no injuries, along with her grandmother and another passenger, a 21-year-old man.
One survivor told the California Highway Patrol that they were heading to Mexico to board a plane for a funeral.
