September is National Baby Safety Month, meaning it’s a great time to examine the world your baby lives in. Whether you have a baby in your own family or are responsible for watching another family’s bundle of joy, there are many things you can do to give the baby a safer space in which to grow, learn, and play.
To keep babies safer in the car, use a car seat with appropriate style and size, and keep the child in that seat until he or she grows out of it. Small infants should be in a rear-facing car seat. Most of these seats accommodate children up to 30 pounds.
At home, babies should sleep in a crib until at least age three. Teach caregivers to put the baby on their back to sleep. Keep blankets, stuffed toys, and other objects out of the crib to reduce safety hazards, including suffocation or, for larger babies, a way to climb out of the crib.
During the day, avoid opening windows near a bed, couch, or other piece of furniture. Babies will naturally want to look out the window, but they may fall out. During parties, watch babies more closely; the bustle of a party makes it easier for a baby or child to become injured.
