Stay Safe This Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer and is statistically one of the deadliest times for traffic fatalities. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that the nation could see 405 fatalities this Labor Day weekend.

The automobile accident attorneys at the Jurewitz Law Group in San Diego want you to remain safe this Labor Day weekend, so we have gathered some Labor Day driving tips that will hopefully make your long weekend an enjoyable and safe experience.

Prepare Properly

Before you even get into your car, you should make sure all of the fluids are replenished and that your tires aren’t dangerously worn and that your brakes are in proper working order. Also, you should stock a car emergency kit with a tire gauge, jumper cables, a flashlight, a tool kit and an emergency stop sign at the very least. Also, bringing a first-aid kit along with emergency supplies such as water, energy bars and a blanket is always a good idea.

Don’t Drink and Drive

This seems like a no-brainer, but every Labor Day weekend people die needlessly due to alcohol-related accidents. If you do drink, make arrangements for a designated driver or simply call for a taxi to get you to your destination.

Wear Your Seatbelt

The NSC has estimated that as many as 148 deaths could be avoided this weekend if people wear their seatbelts. Be sure that you wear your seatbelt and ensure that children are in safety seats appropriate for their size and that they are buckled in.

Don’t Drive Tired and Distracted

Often travelers coming back home on Labor Day weekend are tired from long days of having fun. If you feel fatigued, have had a drink or feel sick, give the wheel to somebody else or postpone your journey back. Know your limits. If you are driving and feel fatigued, pull over at a rest stop. Allow plenty of travel time to discourage frustration and speeding.

Also, enforce a distraction-free zone for drivers. That includes no cell phone or GPS use or any other distraction that may possibly pose a risk to safe driving.

Avoid the Craziness

If possible, don’t return from your Labor Day trip during peak traffic hours. Since most people try to return home in the late afternoon or early evening, you may want to think about getting on the road before 4 p.m. or after 10 p.m.

The Jurewitz Law Group encourages you to have fun this Labor Day weekend, but do so in a safe manner that will ensure that you and your family get to your destination and then get back home healthy and happy.
