San Diego Teen Injured by Intoxicated Driver Dances Once Again
The personal injury attorneys at The Jurewitz Law Group in San Diego recently watched an inspiring story reported by NBC News7 San Diego that we would like to share.
It was a little over a year ago on St. Patrick’s Day 2013 that a San Diego teen was heading home with her family following a Cathedral Catholic High School dance program she had just performed in. Tragically, she, her mother, and her two sisters were seriously injured after an intoxicated wrong-way driver struck them head-on while they were driving on State Route 52.
All of the members of her family suffered major injuries, but the Cathedral High student suffered two broken wrists, a broken right hip, a fractured pelvis, and a traumatic brain injury. She was in a coma for 17 days and spent a total of 75 days in the hospital. She was lucky to be alive, but still had an uncertain future and faced a long road to recovery.
Last week, she defied the odds and did what few would have predicted she would be able to do in the wake of the horrific accident: she danced again.
In fact, the performance fell on the one-year anniversary of the tragic accident that changed her life forever. While she still struggles with the brain injury, which affects the left side of her body, she found the will and the courage to perform again. She was featured in three major dances in the program.
Her mother and sister also have had a long road to recovery. One sister suffered a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, and a partially severed foot. Another sister suffered a concussion, lung damage, and a fractured coccyx. Her mother suffered a concussion and a fractured neck and scapula.
With determination, support, and proper medical care, the family has come a long way in the span of a year and the Jurewitz Law Group applauds their courage — especially the courage of one teen who wouldn’t let the actions of a negligent and intoxicated driver destroy her dreams of dancing once again.
