According to a report by U-T San Diego, on the early morning of October 30, a 63-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a trash truck along with two other vehicles. The tragic incident took place in the Midway District.
San Diego police Officer Humberto Hernandez said that the man, who might have been a transient, was struck while crossing West Camino del Rio close to Moore Street by a Republic Services truck which was just exiting westbound Interstate 8. Investigators have estimated the time of the initial collision to be around 4:46 a.m.
The man proceeded to get hit by two other vehicles in the No. 2 lane of the road where he fell after the first collision, Hernandez said. He succumbed to his wounds before he could be transported to the hospital.
The Rosecrans Street off-ramp from I-8 was closed for several hours following the accident.
While pedestrians should exercise caution and follow the rules of the road, truck drivers have the responsibility to remain vigilant and do their part in avoiding an accident, no matter what time of the day it is. This means driving slower in conditions of low visibility, watching the road and adhering to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
If you have lost a loved one in a fatal pedestrian-truck collision, you may be entitled to compensation for medical and funeral expenses, loss of earning capacity, pain and suffering and other economic and non-economic damages.
