San Diego is a Work of Art

By Ross Jurewitz on April 21, 2014

san diego artAs much as we love protecting your legal rights, the attorneys at the Jurewitz Law Group need to take some time to smell the roses and enjoy the lovely weather and outdoor art that San Diego has to offer. Yes, there is more to San Diego than a zoo, a marine park and beautiful beaches (although those attractions are certainly nothing to sneeze at.)

Here are just a few places you can get your culture on in the San Diego area.

Chicano Park
It’s only about a mile away from the Gas Lamp Quarter and the East Village. Chicano Park showcases murals painted by Chicano artists in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. Located under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, the park features artwork created by local San Diego artists as well as artists from around the state. Check out the “Children’s Mural” painted by students from Lowell Elementary School.

Murals of La Jolla
The non-profit La Jolla Community Foundation sponsors this private community-wide project in which established and lesser-known artists create large outdoor murals to be featured throughout the community. To save time, the large murals are created from digital files sent from the artists and put up billboard style on the walls of buildings.

On The Waterfront — San Diego Bay
This is a bit of a win/win for you. Enjoy the beautiful San Diego waterfront while enjoying art works funded by the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Program. You can enjoy a large sculpture that changes as the sun passes overhead near the San Diego Convention Center or be amazed by a concrete-mosaic-ironwork fountain in Shoreline Park on Shelter Island. Just keep your eyes open because you may miss some of the art that blends in magnificently with its surroundings.

The Works of Niki de Saint Phalle
Dubbed the “Queen of San Diego Art,” the late French-born artist’s unique mosaic installation works dot the San Diego area. Check out her “Nikigator” when visiting Balboa Park. Unfortunately, her most famous work, the sculpture garden “Queen Califia’s Magical Circle” located in a 12-acre Escondido park is currently closed for repairs.

Surfing Madonna
Okay, you won’t see that, but the artist who created the infamous mosaic that portrayed the Madonna on a surfboard has promised to unveil a new work in Encinitas. If you don’t recall, his 10’x10’ mosaic “Surfing Madonna” suddenly appeared on an Encinitas train underpass in 2011. Some loved it — others, not so much. The surreptitiously installed piece generated controversy and national headlines. Eventually, it was removed. The artist, Mark Patterson, has not revealed where he will install his new piece or what the subject matter is. So keep your ears and eyes open.
