Pickup truck driver flees from Escondido fire
SAN DIEGO, CA – The driver of a pickup truck that caught fire on Interstate 15 in Escondido fled on foot from the Tuesday afternoon scene.
According to CHP, the silver pickup truck was still moving and the occupants were still inside when it caught fire on I-15 north near North Nutmeg Street at about 6:20 p.m. Orange flames and white smoke were reported to be coming from the underside of the truck. The brush around the truck also began to spark.
In the time between the 911 call and the fire department’s arrival, the driver bolted from the scene on foot. He was described as a Hispanic adult male wearing a grey reflective jacket and seen running north. It is unclear whether officials were able to apprehend him or why he ran.
One righthand lane was shut down while firefighters put out the fire.
Injuries have not been confirmed and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
