Pedestrian Dies in DUI Accident Blocks From Checkpoint
Labor Day weekend DUI checkpoints have become an unfortunate but necessary part of our national holiday. Recently, San Diego has seen a serious spike in DUI-related accidents and deaths. DUIs have become such a problem that the District Attorney has dubbed 2015 the city’s “Summer of Shame.” Law enforcement agents were out in force over the holiday weekend, hoping to curb some of the dangerous behavior and potentially stop a few accidents.
Sadly, one checkpoint in Imperial Beach was only blocks away from stopping an irresponsible driver from perpetuating the shame. Around 12:40 a.m. Saturday night, a pedestrian was struck and killed as they made their way across Palm Avenue, between Emory Street and 10th Avenue. As reported by NBC 7, witnesses stated that the driver, traveling west bound on Palm, collided with the individual as they attempted to cross the six-lane road. The collision was so loud that deputies manning a DUI checkpoint a block and a half away heard it and rushed to the scene.
Police attempted to provide life saving efforts once on the scene, but were unable to save the victim’s life. The 24-year old driver was arrested for a variety of DUI related offenses and gross vehicular manslaughter. He is scheduled to stand before a judge on Thursday.
