Newport Beach-Speeding Wrong Way Driver Caused Deadly Wreck On 73 Freeway
An elderly woman died when a wrong way driver driving at speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour along the 73 freeway in Newport Beach caused a 5-car pileup near John Wayne Airport. The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, June 5, 2019. The said driver was driving a Mercedes station wagon wrong way on northbound 73 freeway a few minutes before 9 am when it crashed into several cars near Campus Drive. The elderly woman killed was a 65 year old lady in a BMW. The Mercedes crashed into the BMW in a head on collision. The identity of the elderly woman was not released. The driver of the Mercedes was 23-year old Luke Fitch, a resident of Newport Beach. He sustained some injuries. However, he has been expected to survive. Fitch was reportedly swerving in between cars before the crash. One vehicle was reportedly sideswiped by the vehicle Fitch was driving. Afterwards, the Mercedes crashed into the BMW. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash could have been done intentionally. This meant that Fitch could face murder charges. There were 6 people in total in the 5 cars involved in the wreck. It was not clear as to whether or not alcohol and drugs were factors that caused the crash.
