Merced County- 2 People Dead From A Motorcycle Crash On Hornitos Road

2 people were killed in a motorcycle crash on Friday, June 14, 2019, in Merced County on Hornitos Road. The victims were identified as 71-year old Merced resident, Joseph Dias and 16-year old Gwenevieve Ophelia Rubis from Hawaii. Dias was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle with Rubis as his passenger south on Hornitos Road, north of Robinson Road, when the motorcyclist tried to pass a 2014 Toyota RAV 4 being driven by 61-year old Christine Marie Vanloon, also a Merced resident. While attempting the pass, Dias’ motorcycle sideswiped a 2013 Chevrolet pick up truck and utility trailer being driven in the opposite direction by 34-year old Lewis Conway Prock, a Denair resident. The motorcycle traveled back across the double yellow striped street marker into the southbound lane where it crashed with the Toyota. Dias and Rubis were ejected from the motorcycle. They died on the spot at the accident site. The other people involved in the crash were not injured. Rubis was visiting California from Hawaii at the time of the crash.
