Man in a wheelchair killed by car in Chula Vista identified
SAN DIEGO, CA – The identity of the man who was riding a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a car in Chula Vista has been released.
According to the Times of San Diego, the 86-year-old man was identified as Byungsun Han of Chula Vista.
The man was on Oxford Street near Oxford Court when an eastbound Hyundai SUV struck Han just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Witnesses’ accounts are conflicting as to whether or not the victim was inside the unmarked crosswalk at the intersection.
Han was transported to a San Diego hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing and could take several weeks to complete. At this time no charges have been filed as it appears that the driver was most likely following traffic laws when the accident happened. However, the conflicting witness statements and murky nature of right-of-way conventions complicate the investigation.
