Hit and Run Epidemic in San Diego County Spurs Group to Action
A recent rash of fatal hit-and-run accidents in San Diego County has prompted the non-profit charitable organization San Diego County Crime Stoppers to look for new ways to stem the epidemic.
Currently, Crime Stoppers offers a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to convictions in felony cases. A spokesman for the organization says that it is thinking of offering those who call in tips about hit-and-run drivers a higher reward if those tips lead to prosecutions.
“If they are not willing to call for $1,000, maybe they’ll call for $10,000. By adding that additional money it might generate more interest in the community and the media as well,” he told NBC7 News.
The spokesman told NBC7 News that often the families of hit-and-run victims put up additional reward money for tips. The organization is looking for others in the private sector or perhaps from public entities to fund a hit-and-run “restricted-rewards” program in San Diego.
The group currently offers a $10,000 reward for tips concerning arson, but that is a restricted reward where the money donated is earmarked for that specific crime. The organization is hoping to receive donations that can be similarly earmarked for hit-and-run offenses.
It is essential that eyewitnesses to hit-and-run accidents step forward. Without witnesses, the trail runs cold very quickly.
A new law that went into effect in California in 2014 extends the statute of limitations for hit-and-run collisions that result in death or serious injuries. A complaint may be filed within three years of the offense. A hit-and-run driver can also be prosecuted for up to one year after law enforcement has identified the person as a suspect.
Hit-and-run driving is an epidemic in California. Experts say that intoxicated drivers, uninsured motorists, and those who are driving illegally are probably to blame for the huge uptick in hit-and-runs in the state and nationwide.
