Garbage truck catches fire in National City
SAN DIEGO, CA – A garbage truck caught fire on State Route 54 in National City on Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The truck was driving east in the righthand lane near Reo Drive at about 10:15 a.m when it began to catch fire. The driver pulled over to the shoulder, and it was not long before the fire began to spread to the surrounding area.
Two lanes were closed for firefighters and emergency vehicles. The truck fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes and then attention was turned to the rest of the fire.
A crew was also called to pick up debris.
All lanes were reopened at about 11:15 a.m. However, after that, two traffic breaks were needed to finish clearing debris out of the roadway.
