Cuesta Grade, CA- Man In Critical Condition After A Rollover Vehicle Crash On Highway 101

A San Luis Obispo man sustained major injuries from a crash at the top of Cuesta Grade on Tuesday evening, July 16, 2019. A few minutes before 6:30 pm, 29-year old Orion Tyler Ross was driving a black 1998 Toyota 4Runner north on Highway 101 in the no. 2 lane at a speed of more than 70 mph. Ross then made a sudden lane change into the no. 1 lane right in front of the 1994 GMC Suburban, and hit the brakes. The Suburban driver, 29-year old Robert Powers of Paso Robles, was driving his car at 65 mph when the Toyota appeared in front of his car. Powers braked and crashed into the rear of Ross’ Toyota, causing the Toyota to overturn several times across southbound traffic lanes. Ross was ejected into the road. He was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. According to the California Highway Patrol, it seemed that Ross was trying to make a left turn into the brake check area at the summit of the Cuesta Grade. Ross sustained major injuries. He was reportedly in critical condition in a hospital. According to the CHP, Powers was not injured in the crash. The cause of the crash was being investigated.
