San Diego Child InjuryIt seems like just yesterday many parents were picking up their children from their last day of school. But summer is already over! It is officially time to get your children ready for school. Whether your child is excited to start early learning at a local daycare or entering their last year as a high school senior, it is very important for all parents, guardians, and even teachers to freshen up on key back-to-school safety to protect your children.

Although buying new clothes and school supplies are important in getting ready for school; discussing and implementing crucial safety guidelines for your child is just as important, since it may prevent serious harm.

Courtesy of the National Safety Council, here are four crucial topics you should review and implement for your child/student to help keep them safe this school year:

  1. School Supply Safety: When purchasing school materials such as a backpack or scissors, be aware of age appropriateness. Also, encourage your child to avoid over-stuffing his/her backpack to prevent back and shoulder bruises, strains, and/or fractures.
  2. Transportation Safety: Practice transportation safety with your child. If your child rides a bus, teach them to always stand six feet away from the road. If your child walks, show them the importance of using the sidewalk and looking both ways before crossing the street. If your child drives, ride along to see areas of improvement and practice safe driving behavior, such as no cell phones, no drunk driving, and always wearing seat belts.
  3. Playground Safety: Encourage your children to play on safer playground surfaces, such as rubber mats, sand, and wood chips. Falling on concrete or packed earth surfaces may cause harm to young children. Also, all children under the age of four years old should not climb on playground equipment because of the high risk of falling off.
  4. Student Safety: Help protect your child and others by teaching the importance of respecting others. Bullying is a growing epidemic that can result in emotional and physical harm. Also, assemble emergency plans with your children/students in the event of attempted kidnapping, earthquakes, school shootings, and more.
