CBS Anchorwoman Serene Branson Has Blurred Speech Pattern
Early February 14, 2011, CBS anchorwoman Serene Branson showed signs of a slight stroke when her totally normal speech pattern suddenly turned jumbled. Strokes can happen suddenly and without warning.
Symptoms of a Stroke
- blurred or blackened vision in one or both of your eyes
- difficulty with walking, including loss of balance and coordination
- facial numbness
- headache with no apparent reason
- problem with speaking or understanding speech
- weakness in an arm or leg (especially if it's on one side of the body)
Transient Ischemic Attack
Branson's episode was thought to be a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke, from which most people recover within 24 hours.
Most people do not experience warning signs of a stroke. However, they may experience a TIA. During TIA, symptoms match those of a stroke but last for only a few minutes. Unlike a stroke, transient ischemic attack does not result in permanent damage to the brain. In some cases, a TIA may precede a stroke and should be considered a serious condition. Those who experience a TIA should seek medical attention immediately.
Be Aware of Signs and Symptoms
Though, in Branson's case, it was neither a brain injury nor TIA, those who suffer from similar symptoms must be aware of these conditions and seek medical assistance immediately.
These signs may also point to a closed head injury, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI. There are several different types of closed head injury, including concussion, brain contusion, diffuse axonal injury and hematoma.
People suffering from a closed head injury may exhibit headaches, dizziness, nausea, ringing in the ears, slurred speech, vomiting, memory and cognitive problems. The extent of a patient's brain damage depends on the severity of the injury. Closed head injuries range from mild skull injuries to traumatic brain injuries, which can lead to severe brain damage or even death.
