If You Are a Motorcyclist, You Need To Be Aware of the Worst Roads in San Diego County.
Known for its mild year-long weather, San Diego County is an ideal place to let down the top of the convertible or break out that motorcycle that's been sitting in the garage. Though, if you're motorcyclists, there are certain roads that have been statistically proven to be the most dangerous roads in San Diego.
If you're a biker, the one place you don't want to be at 5 p.m. on a Saturday in October is the intersection of state Route 76 (SR-76) and Palomar Mountain Road-also known as South Grade Road- in North County. In 2009, there were 26 motorcycle accidents at that location and time making it the worst motorcycle spot in the county, according to the state Department of Transportation. Countywide data also revealed that more motorcycle accidents occur in October (124) than any other month; more occur on Saturdays (206) and at 5 p.m. (140).
Other Dangerous Intersections
The intersection at Otay Lakes Road at state Route 94 (SR-94) in Jamul and intersection at state Route 78 at Wynola Road in Julian were both ranked as the second most dangerous roads in San Diego County. There were 16 motorcyclist accidents each in 2009. Other locations for motorcycle crashes in the county in 2009 were:
Seven crashes each:
Chihuahua Valley Road at state Route 79 north of Julian
Magnolia Avenue at Route 78 in Ramona
Otay Lakes Road at Wueste Road near Eastlake
Interstate 5 at Route 76 in Oceanside
Interstate 5 at Route 78 in Oceanside
State Route 52 at Interstate 805 in San Diego
Six crashes each:
Alturas Road at Ammunition Drive in Fallbrook
East Grade Road at Route 76 west of Lake Henshaw
Engineers Road at Route 79 by Lake Cuyamaca
Oceanside Boulevard at I-5 in
Oceanside Old Julian Highway at Route 78 in Julian
State Route 15 at state Route 94 in San Diego
I-5 at Interstate 8 in Mission Valley
Cause of Motorcycle Accidents
It is still unclear why there were such a high number of crashes at the foot of Palomar Road. Though, the mountain road stretches over seven miles and consists of 20 hairpin turns. Since 2003, the area has recorded roughly 25 motorcycle wrecks a year.
According to the Irvine-based Motorcycle Safety Foundation, most motorcycle injuries were caused by driving too fast, making an improper turn, or riding while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
