Would you know if you suffered from the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury? If you have experienced any of these conditions, you may be suffering from a MTBI or TBI injury. Find out now...

Your body's movements, thoughts, behavior, and senses are controlled by your brain. In the event your brain suffers a traumatic injury, your body can experience a wide array of physical and psychological symptoms. The most immediate physical symptoms are bruising and swelling, creating pressure inside the skull. While the injured brain tissue expands, it pushes against the inside of the skull and causes even more damage.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (MTBI)

The effects and symptoms of a MTBI injury (concussion) include any or all of the following:

  • A short period of unconsciousness
  • Loss of memory or amnesia with respect to events immediately before or after the accident that caused your injury
  • Headaches
  • Disorientation and confusion
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Blurred vision, bad taste in the mouth, or ringing ears (sensory problems)
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty concentrating

Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

When your injury is moderate to severe, the symptoms may include all of the above and also the following:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting for prolonged periods of time
  • Involuntary convulsions and/or seizures
  • Unable to awaken from sleep
  • Dilation of pupils in one or more eyes
  • Slurring of speech
  • Weak or numb extremities
  • Loss of coordination or balance
  • Confusion
  • Aggressive behavior leading to agitation and/or combativeness

Children's Symptoms

Detecting brain injuries in children is often more difficult since children have difficulty verbalizing or communicating their symptoms. Instead they may act out in the following ways:

  • Refuse to eat
  • Listless or cranky
  • Altered sleep patterns
  • Poor school performance
  • Loss of interest in favorite toys or playtime activities

When Should You See a Doctor?

You should always err on being on the safe side. Therefore, you should always be checked by a doctor if you have been struck in the head and you should seek emergecy care if your symptoms include any of the following:

  • Involutary convulsions
  • Weakness or numbness in extremities
  • Uncontrollable vomitting
  • Slurring of speech
