When a Working Family Member Dies, Who is Eligible for Social Security Benefits?
If the deceased worker has paid enough money into Social Security to be insured for retirement and survivors' benefits, this may be available to direct relatives of deceased workers. Relatives include the widow or widower, child, and dependent parents.
Widow or Widower
- Under Age 50: Not eligible unless taking care of the deceased spouse's minor child
- Age 50-59: Must be disabled to receive a reduced benefit
- Age 60-64: Will receive a reduced benefit
- Age 65 and older: Entitled to full benefits
Child
Children of a deceased worker are entitled to ¾ of the deceased worker's disability benefit. Children of a disabled worker are entitled to ½ of the deceased worker's disability benefit.
In order to be eligible, the child must be:
- Under the age of 18,
- Still in high school,
- Or an adult that have a disability that began prior to age 22.
Dependent Parent
If the parent was dependent on the child or lived in the deceased worker's care, then that parent may be eligible to receive monthly benefits.
