Brain Injury is a Life-Changing Experience and In Order to Cope, It Takes a Strong Will to Live and a Great Support System By Your Side.
49-year old artist Jane Rosett is starting her life all over again, not because she chooses to but because she has to.
Four and a half years ago, Rosett was suddenly hit by another vehicle while stopped. Even though she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, the impact was so strong that it sent her head through the windshield. The crash left her with a severely damaged temporal lobe.
Today, Rosset still lives with a brain injury that has practically erased her long-term memory. She is learning the basics of life once again, rediscovering little things like chewing gum, and meeting her life-long friends for the first time.
She is told that she used to be a real "people person." But these days, she can barely stand being around people. She is also told that she worked as a treatment activist, founded several early AIDS organizations, was a wonderful baker and talented photojournalist, all of which she cannot remember. She is even unable to recognize her pre-accident work when they are shown to her, like the photo on the cover of The New York Times that she curated 10 years ago.
To deal with the unbearable mental and physical pain of traumatic brain injury, she writes and is learning to live day by day, one small feat at a time.
TBI Statistics
Rosett's car accident is one of many TBI incidents that occur every year throughout the U.S. Approximately 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury annually and more than 5.3. million people live with a TBI-related disability, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Experts call it "the silent epidemic" because TBI can do significant damage without leaving any visible signs. Without proper medical assistance, many victims cannot bear the pain and struggle that comes with daily life.
