Tips on Safer Summer Interstate Driving
With 11 months of glorious sunny weather in San Diego every year, it's virtually never a bad time to take a vacation. But when the summer rolls in, it is the perfect time to grab the family and friends and head out on a road trip. Unfortunately, more drivers on the road mean more car accidents.
1. Prepare for a Breakdown
Even if you live in a big city or have a reliable car, it is best to have emergency supplies in your car at all times. You never know what road blocks you may hit or which remote areas you will drive across. If you have a break down, make sure that you have water, extra coolant for your radiator, a flashlight, some food, and other necessities in case you have to wait for a tow truck.
2. Watch Out for Vehicles of All Sizes
Semis and busses can be intimidating, especially since they are large enough to create a considerable amount of wind behind then that will shake your car. When you see a large vehicle about to pass you, either slow down or get ahead of them.
There are also more motorcyclists on the road in the summer months. They may be quick and easy to lose in your blind spot. Use your mirrors, but never let them be a substitute for actually turning your head to check before changing lanes.
3. Watch the Road
We've all heard the saying, "Keep your eyes on the Road." But, when we are headed down a long, straight stretch of road, it's easy to let your mind wander. This is one of the most dangerous things you can do. You always need to keep an eye out for potholes, debris, or even animals sprinting through. At speeds of 65 mph and above, any road obstacles can turn deadly. So, if you feel yourself getting tired, pull over, take a break, and pick up a caffeinated drink.
