Avoid Common Mistakes when Wearing a Seatbelt While Pregnant Before You Risk Being Involved in a Car Accident
A pregnant woman has to take special precautions when they are driving a car. Ideally, they should not be driving at all while they are pregnant—particularly late in pregnancy--but we realize that is unpractical or impossible for most people. If you must drive, please use extra care and wear your seat belt correctly.
Make sure both the shoulder and lap seat belts are snug. If they are too tight, it will be a very uncomfortable ride. If they are too loose, the belts may not function properly in the event of an accident and that will cause serious injury to the mother and unborn child.
Also, push the lap belt as far down as you can, below the belly. Make sure that the lap belt will not become loose and it will stay low. If you are wearing a coat, either take it off before driving or open the coat to ensure that the lap belt will stay low below your pregnant belly.
The seat belt should come across the middle of your shoulder, and NEVER under your arm or off your shoulder. In the event of an accident, it could be very dangerous.
Finally, it is very important that you move your seat back as far as you can. Be sure to use both lap and shoulder belts on every side. Also, if your car will allow it, make sure your steering wheel is tipped towards your chest and away from your pregnant belly. If an accident occurs, you want to reduce the impact that your stomach has on the airbag.
Following these simple and easy to remember rules in seat belt use will greatly reduce your chance of injury in the event of a car accident. But even the safest drivers can still get injured in a car accident.
