Children Are at Biggest Risk to Dog Attacks. Learn How to Protect Your Kids from Dog Bites.
Known as “man’s best friend”, dogs are one of the most beloved and popular pets in America. They are loyal companions who provide joy and protection to families and become just as important as any other member of the home.
In some cases, dogs may not live up to their positive motto and can be dangerous. Researches from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have discovered that over 4.7 million people are bitten each year by dogs. Of the 4.7 million cases, 800,000 of these dogbites call for medical attention, and 16 dog attacks lead to death each year.
The people who are most affected by dog bites are children ages 5 to 9. They are at greater risk than any other age group and boys have a considerably higher rate of injury than girls, probably due to their penchant for taking more risks.
To prevent harm to your kids, here is a list of tips composed by the CDC to protect children from dog bites:
- Do not allow your kids near unfamiliar dogs.
- Do not run away from a dog.
- Do not scream at a dog.
- When an unknown dog approaches, do not move quickly and stay still.
- If a dog knocks you over, curl up into a ball and lay still.
- Make sure there is adult supervision when your children play with dogs.
- Report stray dogs, or dogs are behaving strangely, to an adult.
- Do not make direct eye contact with a dog.
- Do not bother a dog that is taking care of puppies, eating, or sleeping.
- Before allowing your child to pet a dog, be sure the dog has seen you and is able to sniff and see you approach.
- If your child is bitten, let an adult know right away.
