The American Academy of Pediatrics offers a few recommendations on how to keep your child from getting burnt from the sun.
Babies Under 6 Months
- Avoid sun exposure, or keep it to a minimum
- Dress infants in lightweight long pants, long sleeved shirts, and wide hats that shade neck
- Apply minimal sunscreen with at least SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 to small areas like face and back of hands
- If sunburned, apply cold compresses to affected area
For Young Children
- Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside
- Use a sunscreen with SPF 15 (at minimum) and protects against UVA and UVB
For Older Children
- Wear protective clothing, like a hat with a wide brim, sunglasses that block 99-100% UV rays, and cotton clothing with a tight weave
- Stay in shade whenever possible
- Limit sun exposure to peak intensity hours, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
- Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater
- Be sure to apply enough (about one ounce per young adult)
- Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating
- Use caution near water, snow, and sand because it reflects sun and causes a stronger rays
Never take the sun's rays lightly. Remember, you and your children can even be sunburned on cloudy days.
