Dog Bite Attacks Are A Serious Problem in San Diego. Vicious Dogs and Their Irresponsible Owners Need To Be Prosecuted. It Is A Matter Of Public Safety.
A large golden retriever mix bit Palms Spring resident Rene Hillman, 55, and viciously killed her small dog on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, on a Carlsbad boardwalk. The dog's barefooted owner, who fled the scene with his dog, is believed to be in his early 20's and a local. He watched idly as his leashed dog bit Hillman in a park north of Carlsbad Village Drive around 12:30 p.m.
The victim's husband said he saw the attack while walking to purchase food. He ran to help his wife and their white, six-pound Pomeranian, who was killed. The husband kicked the attacking 120-pound dog twice in the head before it finally released his wife. Witnesses were horrified by the scene and ran after the owner and his dog. Though the dog and his owner have not been found yet, police are actively searching. Residents in the area are on high alert for the deadly pair.
Rene Hillman, who was knocked down during the attack, was treated for six puncture wounds and may need rabies vaccinations.

Wednesday's attack was the latest in a series of incidents around the county. Most of these dog bite injuries are sustained through interactions with pit bulls. This goes on to support the city of San Diego's consideration for a pit bull ban.
However, as most dog owners know, dog problems are part of a greater issue with owner responsibility and are not limited to breeds. Regardless, with this attack being the third dog bite accident in the last week, this raises a lot of concern about public safety.
Rene Hillman and her husband should speak with a San Diego County dog bite attack lawyer to learn about their legal rights and file a claim once the dog owner is in custody. Ferocious dogs and careless owners are a public safety matter and must be taken off the streets. The victim is entitled for medical damages, lost wages, and compensation for the death of their Pomeranian.
Our personal injury office offers our sincere condolences to the couple and their deceased dog.
