Carlsbad, CA Car Accident Lawyer Warns About Fatal Auto vs. Pedestrian Accidents
Carlsbad, California is located 35 miles north of San Diego and is occupied by nearly 105,000 residents. It is a beautiful coastal community, covering 42.8 square miles of North County San Diego. Because of its natural beauty and low population density, Carlsbad is known as one of the best cities to live in the United States with high income rates and a progressive commercial sector. Carlsbad is also one of the most expensive places to build and buy real estate as land is at a premium. In 2006, the Associated Press rated Carlsbad fourth in its’ list of top San Diego neighborhoods with strict and impressive ordinances, rules, and regulations on wildlife and natural habitat preservations.
Like most Southern California and San Diego cities, auto accidents are a fact of life. Carlsbad is home to several freeways, highways, and busy roads which see a number of serious auto accidents. Intersate 5 (I-5) runs along Carlsbad’s western edge, while State Route 78 (SR-78) borders Carlsbad to the North. Running through Carlsbad in a north-south direction are El Camino Real and Carlsbad Boulevard. Some of the major east-west roads that run through Carlsbad include Carlsbad Village Drive, Palomar Airport Road, and La Costa Avenue.
According to the most recent car accident data gathered by the State of California, the Statewide Integrated Traffic Record System (SWITRS) 2008 Report states that Carlsbad saw 524 car crashes during the year. That is very low considering Carlsbad’s total population. Equally low for such a large city is the number of accidents that were alcohol related. The number of DUI car accidents in Carlsbad in 2008 was 56. Only two out of Carlsbad’s five fatal auto accidents were alcohol related. However, Carlsbad did see an unusually high number of fatal pedestrian accidents involving cars. There were 25 Carlsbad pedestrian accidents in 2008, three of which were fatal. That means 1 in 3 pedestrian accidents led to the death of a pedestrian.
“The data shows that Carlsbad residents and visitors drive safer than the average San Diego resident,” said Carlsbad car accident lawyer Ross Jurewitz. “However, the number of fatal pedestrian accidents in Carlsbad is disturbing. The City should take a look into why such a high percentage of these car vs. pedestrian accidents are fatal. Is it speeding, poor traffic controls, or other factors?”
