My Child has a Disability. Can I get Social Security?
Children under the age of 18 may qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicare if they can prove that they are disabled and prove that their income and resources fall within the eligibility limits. These payments must be used to benefit the child.
In order to qualify for Social Security, the bureau will review the child's income and resources, as well as that of the family members living in the same household.
Eligibility Requirements
- In 2011, the child must not be working and earn more than $1,000 a month.
- Child must have a physical and/or mental condition that results in "marked and severe functional limitations."
- Condition must have lasted, or expected to last, at least 12 months (or expected to result in death).
The Social Security considers some conditions so disabling that they will begin making payments immediately while they review your child's case.
These include:
- HIV
- Total Blindness
- Total Deafness
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down Syndrome
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Severe Retardation
- Birth Weight Below 2 pounds 10 ounces
