A 17-year-old boy was severely injured in a serious pedestrian accident that
occurred on February 21, 2012, around 11 a.m. at an East San Diego County intersection. According to Sonny Saghera, a spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue Department, the teen was trying to cross the tracks when an eastbound train hit him at La Mesa Boulevard and Spring Street.
Emergency crews had to pull the boy out from underneath the trolley. Medics responding to this serious train accident took him to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment of critical injuries. If it hadn’t been for the conductor’s quick response, the boy could have lost his life.
From the present facts, it is unclear how this pedestrian accident occurred. Witnesses say that the boy apparently was aware of the approaching light-rail train and tried to beat it across the tracks. Until a further investigation is done, no one will know for sure.
