Four people suffered major to moderate injuries when a speeding SUV struck the PT Cruiser they were in on July 14 around 9:15 p.m. on Melrose Lane in El Cajon.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), a speeding Mitsubishi Montero driven by a drunk driver collided into the passenger side of a PT Cruiser. The PT Cruiser was waiting for skateboarders to cross the street in order to turn into a driveway.
One of the occupants in the PT cruiser sustained a severe head injury and was rescued by the fire personnel using hydraulic rescue tools. The three other occupants suffered minor injuries. All the injured victims were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A truck standing behind the PT Cruiser was also struck by the speeding vehicle and its occupant sustained minor bruises and scratches.
Based on this news report, it appears that the SUV driver was speeding and driving while under the influence of alcohol. According to the CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, drunk driving crashes have led to the death of 27 people in San Diego.
According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
The injured victims may file a personal injury claim against the at-fault SUV driver to obtain compensation to cover treatment and medical costs, loss of wages, loss of earning capacity, and any other accident-related damages.
