Neurophysiologist Struck and Killed By Suspected Drunk Driver in Escondido

60-year-old neurophysiologist Robin Vaughan was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Interstate 15 (I-15) in Escondido on July 28 around 12:35 p.m. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), 34-year-old Brian Joseph Webb was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 when he entered northbound I-15 the wrong way from the Del Lago offramp and struck Vaughan head-on.

Vaughan sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. We offer our deepest condolences to Vaughan’s family and many friends for such a tragic loss.

Webb was later arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence with a prior conviction, hit-and-run resulting in death, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, and driving with a suspended license.

According to the CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 27 fatalities and 748 injuries involving alcohol-related crashes in San Diego.

It is indeed an unfortunate thing that due to the neglectful and inebriated driver, one person lost his life. Webb will most likely be found to have violated California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a), which states that “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
