77-year-old Ervina Keller was killed in a tragic hit-and-run crash that occurred on July 13‚ 2011‚ on Acacia Avenue
near Thompson Street in Hemet. According to the police‚ Keller was walking to her sister’s housewhen she was struck by a green Ford Windstar van driven by 47-year-old Salvador Almanza.
Almanza did not stop after hitting Keller. Witnesses said he continued to drive away even after colliding with the victim. Keller was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Police are on a lookout for him but believe Almanza has fled from the area.
The driver committed a felony when he fled from the scene. Not only is this an offense but is also morally incomprehensible that someone would cause an accident and leave the injured to die on the road. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person‚ other than himself or herself‚ or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." Keller may still be alive today if the driver stopped to assist her.
