40-year-old Todd Caulkin was struck and seriously injured in an Encinitas bicycle wreck that occurred on September 21‚ 2011‚ around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Highway 101 (US-101).
According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Robin Lawrence‚ Caulkin was struck after he made a left turn in front of oncoming traffic on Encinitas Boulevard. The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was immediately airlifted to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.
Based on the limited information provided in the news accounts‚ the cause of the accident is not clear. There appears to be right-of-way violation. It was also unclear how fast the vehicle was travelling and what made the motorist hit Caulkin.
