22 People, Mostly Children, Taken to Hospital Due to Illness

Date:  June 12, 2009
Location:  Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Coronado, CA
Type:  Unknown illness, most likely carbon monoxide poisoning
Outcome:  Twenty-two people hospitalized

Twenty-two people, most schoolchildren, fell ill and were taken to San Diego area hospitals after they were thought to be exposed to carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas.  The people were attending a morning Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado, CA at the intersection of C Avenue and Seventh Street.  However, after being taken to the hospital, none of the twenty-two people tested positive for carbon monoxide poisoning.  It is currently unknown what caused them to feel ill.
